Associate University Librarian for Publishing, Preservation, Research, and Digital Access

The University of Delaware Library seeks an innovative, service-oriented leader. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Libraries and Museums, this position directs the Library’s programs, policy, and outreach in the areas of publishing, scholarly communication, and open access. In addition, the position provides leadership in developing digital scholarship, research data curation and services and other emerging forms of scholarship in a rapidly evolving research landscape. The University of Delaware Press is an important part of the Scholarly Publishing and Research program.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership for the design, development, management and support of current and emerging, library-based digital initiatives. Work collaboratively with library staff, university faculty and staff, campus Information Technologies, as well as external national vendors and library partners. Establish criteria of excellence and effectiveness for all aspects of the Library’s digital initiatives.
  • Lead or co-lead relevant campus-wide investigation of research data services and needs, in partnership with the Research Office, UD IT, and faculty. Provide recommendations to improve campus-wide infrastructure and services for research data management, access, curation, and preservation.
  • Provide campus-wide leadership and serve as primary spokesperson for the Library’s digital strategies and services to faculty, staff, students, and other library users. Advance development of digital humanities initiatives and open access on campus.
  • Provide strategic direction for Scholarly Publishing and Research division, administer divisional budget and human resources, including exempt and nonexempt positions, as well as student assistants.
  • Lead the design, development, management, and support of current and emerging library-based digital initiatives, repository services, scholarly communication, and research data services.
  • Serve as a member of the Library Executive Council, the senior management group responsible for library-wide planning, policy-making, budget and resource allocation, faculty and student relations, and the implementation and evaluation of programmatic activities. Participate in strategic planning and problem solving.
  • Represent the University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press in scholarly publishing, research-focused, and digital initiatives within the University and at related regional and national meetings, including the Digital Library Federation.

Qualifications:

  • Master degree from an ALA-accredited graduate school, or a relevant advanced degree and seven to ten years of progressively responsible management experience (preferably in an academic or research library).
  • Experience building scholarly communications and publishing programs in academic institutions. Awareness of current trends and best practices in scholarly communication, publishing and research in higher education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Open Access.
  • Strong technology aptitude with substantial experience designing and/or managing library systems (such as digital rights management systems, institutional repositories, and digitization services). Record of successful technology program leadership including evidence of innovative approaches to projects and services.
  • A broad view of issues in libraries and higher-education and a flexible approach to problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and antiracist educational environment and workplace and to furthering organizational equity, inclusion, and accessibility goals. Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Demonstrated analytic, quantitative, planning and organizational skills. Excellent communication skills with public speaking experience.

Digital Publishing Coordinator

Job Summary

The Digital Publishing Coordinator is primarily responsible for the project management, performance, and completion of digital publishing projects, including overseeing the publication of journal issues, books, and digital projects.  They will be responsible for preparing and producing scholarly content for publication online and in print. Responsibilities*

  • Work with a wide variety of vendors and publishing partners to manage complex and varied publication workflows and schedules to ensure timely completion of multiple projects.

  • Review manuscripts for completeness and potential issues prior to production.

  • Create and maintain internal project documentation and records.

  • Create and maintain project metadata in existing systems.

  • Coordinate tasks with other team members, delegating simpler tasks to student employees when appropriate.

  • Prepare and validate materials for online publication in digital formats such as EPUB, XML, and PDF, in addition to print formats.

  • Work with members of the Publishing Technology team to ingest, release, and troubleshoot digital publications.

  • Proofread for obvious structural, grammatical, or stylistic errors.

  • Plan and participate in educational workshops and other outreach activities, including occasional conference presentations.

  • Contribute to library-wide initiatives as a member of relevant task forces and committees.

Associate Dean for Collections & Discovery

Clemson University Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative, and inclusive leader to serve as our inaugural Associate Dean for Collections and Discovery. The successful candidate will set the vision and strategic directions for the new division and direct the Libraries’ overall collection strategy – planning, developing, interpreting, and implementing policies and procedures related to the acquisition, description, and discovery of scholarly and cultural heritage resources in a variety of formats. Approximately 40 faculty and staff will be part of this new division, working in the following departments: Acquisitions (including print, e-resources, and continuing resources purchasing and management; resource sharing; and collection development); Metadata Services; Digitization, and Special Collections and Archives. The successful candidate would be one of three new associate deans who will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Libraries and setting the Libraries strategic directions as a member of its Senior Leadership Team. This is a 12-month administrative faculty position, with faculty rank and status.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing collections strategy for the sustainable delivery of inclusive scholarly resources to meet the needs of the university, while also managing and supporting the development of 9 direct reports and overseeing a collections budget of $9 million. Among many other important duties, the Associate Dean will develop a focused program of high-quality research and creative accomplishments, consistent with professional responsibilities and the Libraries’ mission and goals.

Qualifications:

The required qualifications for the position include and ALA-accredited graduate degree, at least five years of management/supervisory experience in progressively responsible positions in an academic library, work experience in at least one of the division’s four departments, and a record of professional librarianship, research/scholarship, and service that would merit tenure at the Associate Librarian rank or higher.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in personnel, budget, and project management, knowledge of R1 library collections or special collections, and evidence of competence in strategic planning and organizational development. Additional ideal qualities include a second graduate or other advanced degree, and experience with Ex Libris’ Alma Library Services Platform (LSP) and Primo VE discovery system.

Salary & Benefits

Faculty rank and a minimum salary of $95,000 based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. Various medical plans, dental plans, and retirement plans are available. 18 days annual leave, 15 days sick leave, 13 paid holidays, and liberal professional development leave are provided. Library faculty receive an individual stipend for travel or other professional development activity.

Open Scholarship Librarian

The Syracuse University Libraries Department of Research and Scholarship (DRS) invites applications from creative and inquisitive individuals to join our Digital and Open Scholarship Team in the role of Open Scholarship Librarian. DRS is home to the subject, research data, and collection development and analysis librarians in the Syracuse University Libraries. The department supports the research, teaching, scholarship, and creative work of the Syracuse University community through collection development, information literacy instruction, and research services. The department’s librarians represent the interests of schools and colleges in developing dynamic library collections and services to advance the success of the University community. Four functional teams within DRS (Collections, Research Impact, Subject Instruction, and Digital & Open Scholarship) collaborate to emphasize collections, services, and programming within their areas of focus and among their constituencies.

Within this structure, the Digital and Open Scholarship Team (comprised of the Lead Librarian for Digital and Open Scholarship, the Research Data Services Librarian, and the Open Scholarship Librarian) fosters and supports innovative uses of digital technology through:

  • Assisting patrons in meaningful, ethical, and insightful engagement with data in all facets of their work
  • Providing expert guidance in contemporary scholarly communications issues including authors’ rights, open access, and new modes of publishing
  • Providing opportunities for connection and support among digital scholarship communities across campus and beyond

The Open Scholarship Librarian will collaborate with internal and external partners to create and maintain policies and workflows relating to publishing and dissemination of scholarship.  This role involves shared responsibility for the SURFACE repository, guiding the cross-departmental team that supports the repository, and providing outreach and support to users of the repository with the help of subject liaison librarians. The Open Scholarship Librarian will additionally provide consultation on matters of open access publishing, archiving of scholarly pre- and post-prints, and other areas of authors’ rights.

For over a decade, librarians in the Department of Research and Scholarship have provided leadership and supported open scholarship initiatives on campus though outreach, research, and repository work at Syracuse University. DRS librarians will support the Open Scholarship Librarian’s work through collaboration, relationship building, mentorship, and the Libraries’ many opportunities for professional development will offer additional support.

Digital Publishing Specialist

SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and supporting a variety of digital publishing initiatives involving Association members, peer organizations, and other collaborative partners and that benefit the work of religious and theological libraries and support expanded access to scholarship, collections, and other resources in religion and theology. These initiatives include the Atla Open Press, LibGuides, Omeka Exhibits for the Atla Digital Library, and other collaborative projects focused on the production, discovery, and access of publications and resources, including open educational resources, in religion and theology.

This position will primarily coordinate Atla’s open access publishing program, including managing and supporting the editorial workflows and providing final output production support for Atla Open Press’s monograph and journal publishing programs. This position also evaluates, implements, and optimizes platform feature sets to ensure consistency, functionality, and usability. The person in this role will develop documentation and training to support editor, author, and copyeditor usage of the publishing platforms as well as coordinate and ensure accurate delivery of publishing program data to third party discovery and access portals such as CrossRef and DOAJ. This position liaises with member editors, authors, copyeditors, and strategic partners to ensure that workflows are followed or are adapted as needed to ensure quality scholarly output and to support member engagement in digital publishing processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the publishing program workflow by providing training to editors, authors, copyeditors, and others who interact with the publishing program platforms, answering participant questions and managing expectations, monitoring the publication timelines to ensure timely delivery of content to Atla staff and contractors, and ensuring documentation and guidelines are current and accessible.
  • Completion of layout and production of Atla Open Press publications utilizing Adobe InDesign and Illustrator in EPUB, PDF, and HTML formats as required.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on feature implementation and utilization of Atla Open Press’s open source publishing platforms, including development and support of workflows in XML / XLST or JSON, as well as support development of multi-modal scholarship forms, to ensure efficiency, consistency, and standardization across all platforms and publications.
  • Support the implementation of the publishing program platforms during periods of software upgrades through communication with software developers, Atla IS staff, and users of the publishing program platforms and update workflows and documentation as needed to reflect changes brought about by upgrades.
  • Work with curators of online exhibits to develop their content for display in Omeka, including providing content and copyediting support and assisting with verification of citations and rights clearance.
  • Support marketing and outreach to potential editors, authors, readers, libraries, archives, and other content collectors and creators to create awareness, participation, authorship, citation, and participation in the digital publishing initiatives of the Association.
  • Create documentation including guidelines, protocols, and best practices for the digital publishing programs.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of publishing standards and best practices, library-oriented open-source platforms, established and emerging technologies, and both national and international projects and programs within the realm of library and open access publishing.
  • Network, collaborate, and participate in organizations and groups regarding digital and open access publishing.
  • Conduct periodic analyses of usage statistics of publishing program outputs and prepare reports to editorial boards.
  • Participate actively in appropriate professional societies and report on outcomes and work processes developed at occasional professional conferences.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Institutional Repository Librarian

San Francisco State University’s J. Paul Leonard Library is a busy, teaching-oriented institution supporting a community of 25,000 students as well as faculty and staff. Our campus is part of the 23-campus California State University system, and we are seeking applications for an Institutional Repository Librarian who will work collaboratively with other librarians and staff across the system to operationalize the CSU-wide institutional repository, ScholarWorks. Additionally, the Institutional Repository Librarian will liaise with our campus community to promote ScholarWorks to students and faculty and provide related guidance on topics such as web accessibility and copyright.

Responsibilities include:
• Serving as the primary ScholarWorks campus project manager for San Francisco State University, to include active participation in CSU-wide decision making on metadata practices, systemwide policies, and platform design.
• Developing local workflows and best practices for collecting, ingesting, and preserving the research and creative works of our students and faculty, in partnership with staff in the Library’s Digital Scholarship Center.
• Providing guidance to the Division of Graduate Studies and academic departments on web accessibility expectations for student works, with a particular focus on theses, dissertations, and capstone projects.
• Promoting self-archiving in ScholarWorks to faculty, advocating for the retention of author rights, and serving as a resource for copyright questions.
• Troubleshooting technical issues and communicating these to Chancellor’s Office staff to help inform the development process.
• Creating public-facing user documentation and outreach materials.
• Participating collegially in the collaborative development, implementation, assessment, and improvement of library resources, services, policies, and procedures.
