Open Publishing Production Assistant

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invite applications and nominations for the position of the Open Publishing Production Assistant in the Research Informatics and Publishing department. This position will report to the Open Publishing Program Specialist and be a key member of the Open Publishing Program.

This position will be responsible for production of the Bibliography sites and leading the accessibility initiative within Open Publishing. Production work is done using a variety of open source platforms and software (Open Journal Systems (OJS) and Drupal, primarily) in order to publish open access scholarly journals, monographs, bibliographies, and other digital publications.

Tasks include submitting content and content migration into OJS and Drupal, minor layout proofreading and editing, DOI registration, designing and documenting workflows, monitoring and ensuring the quality of data input, tracking project progress, some basic web design work and customization using HTML/CSS, and training student assistants on PDF and web accessibility and journal publishing workflows.

The Research Informatics and Publishing Department is a new, collaborative and innovative unit within the Penn State University Libraries. This department enhances the technology-driven teaching and research capacity of the Penn State community.   • Bachelor’s degree in Information Science, Communications, or Art/Humanities or other appropriate field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the scholarly publishing process.
  • Understanding of html/xml/css, and relational databases.
  • Familiarity with open source software programs such as OJS and Drupal.
  • Creativity and flexibility in using technology to solve problems. Experience with workflow development.

Required competencies will include:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe CS (especially Acrobat Pro).
  • Knowledge of document and web accessibility best practices.
  • Ability to work both on projects independently and in small results-oriented teams, and to meet deadlines.

Director, Mason Publishing Group

The George Mason University Libraries seeks to fill the position of the Director, Mason Publishing Group. Responsibilities:
This Director position leads the University Libraries’ Mason Publishing Group, a unit which includes the George Mason University Press and Mason Publishing imprints, Open Educational Resources program, open access e-journals, Copyright Support, and various other Scholarly Communications activities. Incumbent provides leadership in planning, acquisition of content and projects, scholarly and editorial oversight, business management, contract administration, staffing, marketing and outreach, and external relations.

The position operationally reports to the Associate University Librarian for Digital Strategies and Systems, and programmatically functions under the purview of the Dean of Libraries and University Librarian.

Duties:

1.           Develops and sustains Open Access and market-focused digital publishing initiatives;

2.           Integrates a GMU Press program with Library-based publishing initiatives, including the Mason Publishing imprint initiatives;

3.           Serves as the lead advocate for the GMU Press across the university and externally;

4.           Manages an integrated program of existing and planned publishing services, including:

·      Institutional repository (Mason Archival Repository Services),

·      E-journals and conference proceedings publishing and hosting,

·      E-book publishing/production,

·      Data publication,

·      Open Educational Resources (OERs), and

·      Two publishing imprints (GMU Press and Mason Publishing), including their print and digital components;

5.           Collaborates with the Libraries’ Digital Scholarship Center in support of faculty and student projects, including scholarly dissemination activities as appropriate;

6.           Oversees the University’s Copyright Compliance policies and attendant responsibilities;

7.           Oversees the coordination of Scholarly Communication activities of University Libraries and programmatic outreach to Mason’s faculty and students;

8.           Develops sustainable publishing and more broadly scholarly communication/dissemination partnerships across the university;

9.           Manages the multifaceted business aspects of the publishing program, including Profit & Loss forecasts (P&L), author agreements, contract administration, and production operations and workflows, and fiscal matters;

10.        Supervises two (2) full time professional faculty positions, one (1) Classified Staff, and (as allocated annually) graduate professional assistants; and

11.        Performs other related professional duties within University Libraries and/or university as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

·      Graduate degree in a relevant discipline;

·      Demonstrated successful managerial and administrative experience in publishing generally, and e-publishing, in particular;

·      Knowledge of current practices and trends in academic publishing, Open Educational Resources, scholarly communications, open-access, data publishing and copyright;

·      Ability to create and monitor budgets;

·      Demonstrated experience in acquisitions, P&L, writing and executing author agreements, contract administration and publishing operations/workflows excellent writing, speaking and interpersonal skills; and

·      Ability to build collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationships with people of varying backgrounds.

Preferred:

·      Five years of increasingly responsible experience in the academic publishing sector.

Appointment/Benefits/Salary:
12-month professional faculty appointment without rank; health plan options and paid life insurance; several retirement plans, including TIAA-CREF; 24 vacation days and 12 paid holidays; tuition waiver for self.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience, and not less than $82,500/year.

About this role

Kansas State University Libraries invite applications and nominations for a creative, collaborative, and service-minded individual to join our Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship (CADS) as Scholarly Communication and Copyright Librarian. The individual in this position will have a primary focus of leading, educating, and providing outreach for copyright services, open access, and K-State’s Open/Alternative Textbook Initiative, and will help support the Center’s other services. This position reports to the CADS team lead in the Academic Services Department.

Following a May 22, 2018 fire in Hale Library, the university’s main library, the administration, faculty and staff, who had been looking forward to the creation of a first-floor learning commons, have instead reimagined the entire library from the ground up. Vital to the future of K-State Libraries will be strengthened scholarly communication and copyright services.

This is a full-time tenure-track academic appointment carrying full faculty status and responsibilities.  The candidate must have a commitment to scholarly/creative activities and professional service necessary for pursuing tenure at Kansas State University Libraries.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary contact for copyright and open licensing questions; maintain the copyright web presence and libguides.
  • Provide outreach, education, workshops, promotion, and consultations to the campus community regarding copyright/fair use, authors’ rights, the institutional repository, publishing, including open/alternative educational resources, open access, and other scholarly communication topics.
  • Develop programs, processes, and services that facilitate the discovery, adoption, creation, and adaptation of OERs; develop methods for assessing and reporting progress in adopting OERs and the library’s role in supporting and promoting their use.
  • Serve as a core team member of the Open/Alternative Textbook Initiative team, coordinating the application process, reviewing and voting for grant awards, and maintaining documentation.
  • Assist with New Prairie Press activities in the publication of journals, conferences, ebooks, and OER textbooks.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with colleagues to meet current scholarly communication demands and discover future campus needs related to the creation and dissemination of digital scholarship.
  • Initiate, build and nurture excellent relationships with a diverse community within the university, as well as external partners, in support of scholarly communication services.
  • Stay abreast of emerging, innovative trends and technologies, standards, publishing models, scholarly communication developments and related legislative initiatives and evaluate their adaptation to improve the local environment.

Scholarly Communications Librarian

Clemson University Libraries invites candidates for a tenure-track Scholarly Communications Librarian. The Scholarly Communications Librarian will collaborate closely with librarians, faculty, students, and other academic units to lead and facilitate efforts related to scholarly communications. The incumbent will support new models of research and scholarship by providing and managing innovative digital tools and publishing platforms for content creation, delivery, discovery, and analysis. This position also supports faculty and students in the areas of copyright and intellectual property. Library faculty are members of the academic community, with responsibilities in the areas of librarianship, scholarship, and service. The incumbent is accountable to the Head of Library Technology.

Responsibilities include:

Librarianship, Instruction, and Outreach

· Serves as an advocate for new forms and practices of scholarly communications on campus and in the broader academic community.

· Integrates scholarly communications into library instruction and departmental liaison activities. Develops instructional resources and workshops. Provides guidance to library staff regarding scholarly communication and coordinates with subject specialists to broaden the understanding of scholarly communication issues.

· Serves as a campus resource on issues and trends relevant to intellectual property, copyright, fair use, author rights, open access, and metrics for assessing impact of scholarly works.

· Leads the Libraries’ institutional repository initiatives through solicitation of content from students and faculty, including deposits of journal articles, conference proceedings, and other published and unpublished research.

· Oversees scholarly publishing services, including promotion and adoption of ORCIDs and DOIs, collaboration with the Clemson University Press, and managing open access journals. Manages the Libraries’ Open Access Publishing Fund Program.

· Collaborates with the Open Resources Librarian to promote open educational resources (OER) and affordable learning initiatives to the campus community.

Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities

· Develops a focused program of high-quality research and creative accomplishments, consistent with professional responsibilities and the Libraries’ mission and goals.

Service

· Actively participates and demonstrates leadership in professional responsibilities that serve the libraries, university, profession, and community.

Required Qualifications

· An ALA-accredited graduate degree in librarianship or a relevant accredited graduate degree in another scholarly field as deemed appropriate by the Libraries.

Salary and Benefits

Faculty rank and competitive salary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. The salary range is $68,000-$70,000. Various medical plans, dental plans, and retirement plans are available. 18 days annual leave, 15 days sick leave, 13 paid holidays, and liberal professional development leave are provided. Library faculty receive an individual stipend for travel or other professional development activity.
