Job Description Summary

The 21st-Century Publishing Fellow is a member of the Library’s Research Data and Digital Scholarship unit, reporting to the Assistant University Librarian, Research Data and Digital Scholarship. The incumbent contributes to the team’s efforts to transform the digital publishing landscape by piloting a publication program focusing on high-quality, media-rich, networked, and interactive public scholarship, often produced under the aegis of a new collaboration with Penn Press.

The incumbent proactively explores emerging publishing technologies, platforms, and practices, and provides leadership in recommending, planning, and implementing pilot digital publishing services that will provide the campus community with the tools, resources, and infrastructure for publishing multimodal projects and experimental digital scholarship.

They serve as a conduit between various Libraries functions (copyright and intellectual property, discovery, preservation, technology and digital initiatives), between the Libraries and University of Pennsylvania Press (editorial vetting, production, marketing, peer review), and between various campus centers (such as the McNeil Center for Early American Studies and the Price Lab for Digital Humanities) to establish sustainable workflows, processes, and project choices that will enable the digital publishing pilot to succeed.

This is a two-year position with the possibility of extension for a further two years.

The compensation package for the fellowship includes a $65,000 salary plus benefits.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development, management, and assessment of a pilot of sustainable, innovative open publishing services for publications that may include e.g., archival materials, time-based media, data, and other digital media.
  • In collaboration with the Digital Projects and Publishing working group, recommend, implement, and manage a sustainable platform or interoperable infrastructure that will meet most campus needs in innovative digital publishing.
  • Provide outreach about the new publishing services to campus centers and departments and work in close cooperation with key campus partners (e.g., faculty, students, the press, campus centers, etc.) to discover and develop timely and relevant projects and programs that will prove the worth of the pilot.
  • Collaborate with Penn Press on multimodal digital publishing projects, working with editors, authors, and the Penn Press Faculty Editorial Board to scope potential projects and recommend best practices for planning, proof of concept creation and review, IP issues, etc.
  • Work with colleagues on the Research Data and Digital Scholarship and Educational Technology and Learning Management teams and the Price Lab for Digital Humanities to provide enriching, project-based pedagogical opportunities for students in data visualization, sound editing and recording, video production, text and data mining, and other digital methods required by the chosen projects.
  • Project manage the digital publication process for selected projects, ensuring their accessibility, discoverability, and sustainability.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with providers of next-generation publishing infrastructure (Lyrasis, DataCite, Educopia, etc.)
  • Keep current with changing research and publication expectations, especially developments in publishing and dissemination practices, platforms, and tools.
  • Participate in regional, national, and international communities of practice.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • 3-5 years’ experience in publishing, digital projects, or library and information sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of trends in higher education, academic libraries, open research infrastructure, scholarly publishing, organizational development, and stakeholder management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the scholarly publishing ecosystem and how it pertains to digital scholarship projects, and of the digital research lifecycle.
  • Experience with and knowledge of digital scholarly publishing platforms.
  • A demonstrated record managing a portfolio of projects at different scales and priorities, each with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships across multiple institutional divisions.
  • Master’s degree in library science and/or a humanities or humanistic social science field.

Open Scholarship Librarian

Description

New York University Libraries is seeking a faculty librarian to support the open scholarship, digital publishing, and repository needs of research and teaching across a wide range of social sciences, humanities, and sciences fields at NYU. This individual works in a unit that includes the Scholarly Communications and Information Policy and Digital Scholarship Services departments as part of a team working to grow and sustain a constantly evolving set of services that supports researchers across the full scholarly communication lifecycle, including content creation, preservation, and storage; rights management; and content discovery and dissemination.

The Open Scholarship Librarian plays a key role in developing and implementing a broad-ranging outreach and education program for digital publishing and repository services for NYU. They work in close collaboration with other specialists to promote tools and services in support of Open Access and Open Scholarship, such as the institutional repository, ORCID Identifiers, and Digital Object Identifiers; to identify and document workflow best practices for the curation and management of digital collections and digital publishing projects, including collections such as electronic theses and dissertations; and to instruct researchers in navigating rights and access issues.This person works collaboratively with Liaison and instruction librarians, technologists, metadata architects, preservation specialists, and developers within NYU Libraries to maintain and improve systems for description, storage, discovery, rights management, and access to digital content held within the institutional repository.

The Open Scholarship Librarian participates in library-wide committees, activities, and special projects, especially those involving new methodologies and scholarly communication practices, especially as they relate to open access and open scholarship. They will develop and maintain awareness of scholarly communication initiatives across subject areas, attending professional meetings, workshops and conferences for training and continuing professional development. As a member of the Scholarly Communications and Information Policy department, this position reports to the Director of Scholarly Communications and Information Policy and operates in close coordination with the Scholarly Communications Librarian, Digital Scholarship Services, Data Services, Preservation and Conservation, and Digital Library Technology Services.

Research

Faculty Librarians also explore their own active research agenda, contributing their expertise, experiences, and investigations to build new knowledge in their chosen areas. The Open Scholarship Librarian will be well positioned to make substantive contributions to research in a number of areas, including, but not limited to, explorations of the role that libraries play in cultivating an open research culture and leveraging that culture to promote more inclusive equitable, and ethical research and publication practices; the collaborative establishment of non-commercial online resources and practices; the role of libraries in creating necessary technological systems that enable equitable access to online information; the consideration of biases within the terminology, architecture, and encoding of these systems; and the ethical and privacy considerations that arise in an era of mass data collection.

Associate University Librarian for Publishing, Preservation, Research, and Digital Access

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Libraries and Museums, this position directs the Library’s programs, policy, and outreach in the areas of publishing, scholarly communication, and open access. In addition, the position provides leadership in developing digital scholarship, research data curation and services and other emerging forms of scholarship in a rapidly evolving research landscape. The University of Delaware Press is an important part of the Scholarly Publishing and Research program.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership for the design, development, management and support of current and emerging, library-based digital initiatives. Work collaboratively with library staff, university faculty and staff, campus Information Technologies, as well as external national vendors and library partners. Establish criteria of excellence and effectiveness for all aspects of the Library’s digital initiatives.
  • Lead or co-lead relevant campus-wide investigation of research data services and needs, in partnership with the Research Office, UD IT, and faculty. Provide recommendations to improve campus-wide infrastructure and services for research data management, access, curation, and preservation.
  • Provide campus-wide leadership and serve as primary spokesperson for the Library’s digital strategies and services to faculty, staff, students, and other library users. Advance development of digital humanities initiatives and open access on campus.
  • Provide strategic direction for Scholarly Publishing and Research division, administer divisional budget and human resources, including exempt and nonexempt positions, as well as student assistants.
  • Lead the design, development, management, and support of current and emerging library-based digital initiatives, repository services, scholarly communication, and research data services.
  • Serve as a member of the Library Executive Council, the senior management group responsible for library-wide planning, policy-making, budget and resource allocation, faculty and student relations, and the implementation and evaluation of programmatic activities. Participate in strategic planning and problem solving.
  • Represent the University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press in scholarly publishing, research-focused, and digital initiatives within the University and at related regional and national meetings, including the Digital Library Federation.

Qualifications:

  • Master degree from an ALA-accredited graduate school, or a relevant advanced degree and seven to ten years of progressively responsible management experience (preferably in an academic or research library).
  • Experience building scholarly communications and publishing programs in academic institutions. Awareness of current trends and best practices in scholarly communication, publishing and research in higher education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Open Access.
  • Strong technology aptitude with substantial experience designing and/or managing library systems (such as digital rights management systems, institutional repositories, and digitization services). Digital Publishing Coordinator

The Digital Publishing Coordinator is primarily responsible for the project management, performance, and completion of digital publishing projects, including overseeing the publication of journal issues, books, and digital projects.  They will be responsible for preparing and producing scholarly content for publication online and in print. Responsibilities*

  • Work with a wide variety of vendors and publishing partners to manage complex and varied publication workflows and schedules to ensure timely completion of multiple projects.

  • Review manuscripts for completeness and potential issues prior to production.

  • Create and maintain internal project documentation and records.

  • Create and maintain project metadata in existing systems.

  • Coordinate tasks with other team members, delegating simpler tasks to student employees when appropriate.

  • Prepare and validate materials for online publication in digital formats such as EPUB, XML, and PDF, in addition to print formats.

  • Work with members of the Publishing Technology team to ingest, release, and troubleshoot digital publications.

  • Proofread for obvious structural, grammatical, or stylistic errors.

  • Plan and participate in educational workshops and other outreach activities, including occasional conference presentations.

  • Contribute to library-wide initiatives as a member of relevant task forces and committees.

Required Qualifications*

Associate Dean for Collections & Discovery

Clemson University Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative, and inclusive leader to serve as our inaugural Associate Dean for Collections and Discovery. The successful candidate will set the vision and strategic directions for the new division and direct the Libraries’ overall collection strategy – planning, developing, interpreting, and implementing policies and procedures related to the acquisition, description, and discovery of scholarly and cultural heritage resources in a variety of formats. Approximately 40 faculty and staff will be part of this new division, working in the following departments: Acquisitions (including print, e-resources, and continuing resources purchasing and management; resource sharing; and collection development); Metadata Services; Digitization, and Special Collections and Archives. The successful candidate would be one of three new associate deans who will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Libraries and setting the Libraries strategic directions as a member of its Senior Leadership Team. This is a 12-month administrative faculty position, with faculty rank and status.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing collections strategy for the sustainable delivery of inclusive scholarly resources to meet the needs of the university, while also managing and supporting the development of 9 direct reports and overseeing a collections budget of $9 million. Among many other important duties, the Associate Dean will develop a focused program of high-quality research and creative accomplishments, consistent with professional responsibilities and the Libraries’ mission and goals.

Qualifications:

The required qualifications for the position include and ALA-accredited graduate degree, at least five years of management/supervisory experience in progressively responsible positions in an academic library, work experience in at least one of the division’s four departments, and a record of professional librarianship, research/scholarship, and service that would merit tenure at the Associate Librarian rank or higher.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in personnel, budget, and project management, knowledge of R1 library collections or special collections, and evidence of competence in strategic planning and organizational development. Additional ideal qualities include a second graduate or other advanced degree, and experience with Ex Libris’ Alma Library Services Platform (LSP) and Primo VE discovery system.

Salary & Benefits

Faculty rank and a minimum salary of $95,000 based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. Various medical plans, dental plans, and retirement plans are available. 18 days annual leave, 15 days sick leave, 13 paid holidays, and liberal professional development leave are provided. Library faculty receive an individual stipend for travel or other professional development activity.
