Publishing Marketing Manager

The Publishing Marketing Manager plans and executes marketing strategies at Michigan Publishing, which includes three units: the University of Michigan Press, Michigan Publishing Services, and Deep Blue Repositories and Research Data Services. This position oversees author relations, liaises with the University of Michigan Press’s distributed clients, and supports the growth of marketing and outreach for Michigan Publishing more broadly, including for the University of Michigan Press’s regional trade, English Language Teaching textbooks, and scholarly imprints. The Manager develops branding and promotional materials, brochures, advertisements, and collateral, including seasonal catalogs. The Marketing Manager also collaborates on strategy and content creation for Michigan Publishing’s social media and web presences in order to increase visibility, reach, and brand awareness in alignment with the organization’s broader marketing needs.  This position reports to the Director of Sales, Marketing, and Outreach (SMO).

Responsibilities*

  • Serve as the point person for authors, ensuring regular and coordinated engagement and satisfaction with marketing and sales throughout the pre/post-publishing process.

  • Communicate with authors and collaborate with internal staff and relevant vendors about author needs and individual and collective marketing plans and activities, including engaging with and promoting authors within the brand’s platforms.

  • Capture, analyze, and deliver metrics for authors and other stakeholders about the impact of their titles and other Press and Michigan Publishing activities in order to optimize promotions and sales.

  • Create self-service tools and other materials to support author engagement and empower authors to be brand ambassadors.

  • Coordinate, design, and launch seasonal catalogs and marketing materials such as flyers, leaflets, newsletters, advertisements, and other promotional assets that showcase the products, services, and key messages of the Michigan Publishing brand.

  • Collaborate with the marketing team to develop the strategy and content for social media and digital platforms like blogs and podcasts and engage with authors, scholarly partners, communities of practice, and customers.

  • Help build outreach strategies for Michigan English Language Teaching titles and make recommendations regarding the textbook market.

  • Support Michigan Publishing Services (MPS) and Deep Blue Repositories and Research Data Services with their brand strategy and specific marketing projects.

  • Assist in the creation of messaging and outreach materials about Michigan Publishing units for U-M campus departments, institutes, faculty, funders, and academic leaders.

  • Optimize existing workflows and explore new marketing and project management processes, tools, and systems, including for marketing analytics.

Required Qualifications*

  • Some college education in areas of communication, journalism, public relations, business, education, or a related field and some experience in publicity or marketing-related positions or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Exhibits strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects with multiple components, including the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Understands various sales and marketing techniques and market intelligence platforms and productivity tools.

Work Schedule

  • During COVID-19, the Michigan Publishing team is primarily working remotely.  The Michigan Publishing Marketing Department would consider hiring a fully remote candidate, but would prefer a candidate able to work onsite either some or most of the time. While access to a personal Internet connection is desirable, U-M Library provides support and resources for remote work needs.

  • 40 hours/week; typically Monday – Friday, may change as needed.

  • May require evening or weekend work during occasional special events.

Diversity in Digital Publishing Postdoctoral Research Associate

Brown University invites applications for a one-year Diversity in Digital Publishing Postdoctoral Research Associate appointment funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. As a member of the Center for Digital Scholarship, based at the Brown University Library, the postdoctoral fellow will work as part of a multi-skilled team of experts to advance a set of public-facing faculty digital publications currently under development as part of the Mellon-supported Digital Publications Initiative. The fellow will help conceptualize, research, and administer a group of projects that relate directly to the history and experience of oppressed or marginalized peoples, are intended to engage both scholarly audiences and the wider public, and consider the political and cultural concerns of scholarly work that draws on and interprets traumatic pasts.

The Diversity in Digital Publishing Postdoctoral Research Associate will also teach one course during the academic year in digital humanities or the fellow’s home discipline (departmental affiliation will be negotiated as appropriate). The fellow may play a role in the planning of a lecture series and other events designed to increase awareness of diverse scholarly voices. Approximately one third of the fellowship period would be devoted to the fellow’s own digital scholarship.

Scholars who have received their degrees within the last five years and pursue work in the humanities and the humanistic social sciences are eligible to apply. The one-year position, with a preferred start date of July 1, 2022 (or no later than September 1), provides a $60,000 stipend plus benefits as well as $5,000 in research funds.

Position Summary
The Director of Publications is a member of the senior staff of the American Philosophical Society (APS) and reports directly to its Executive Officer. The ideal candidate will bring leadership and vision to the oldest scholarly imprint in North America and will develop and grow the Society’s publication through an active recruitment and acquisitions program.

The Director is responsible for acquiring manuscripts, supervising editorial staff, maintaining contact with authors and vendors, receiving manuscripts for review and possible publication, coordinating the marketing and distribution of publications. The Director is also responsible for presenting reviewed works to the Society’s Committee on Publications for discussion and decision. Editorial production work involves copy editing and proofreading accepted manuscripts, working with outside compositors and printers to publish books and collaborating with the APS fulfillment department to market published works. The Director will shepherd manuscripts through the review and editorial process, including working with authors to improve their manuscripts while exploring partnerships with other presses, especially university presses, to expand the reach of the APS Press.

Contemporary Publishing Fellow

Job Description Summary

The 21st-Century Publishing Fellow is a member of the Library’s Research Data and Digital Scholarship unit, reporting to the Assistant University Librarian, Research Data and Digital Scholarship. The incumbent contributes to the team’s efforts to transform the digital publishing landscape by piloting a publication program focusing on high-quality, media-rich, networked, and interactive public scholarship, often produced under the aegis of a new collaboration with Penn Press.

The incumbent proactively explores emerging publishing technologies, platforms, and practices, and provides leadership in recommending, planning, and implementing pilot digital publishing services that will provide the campus community with the tools, resources, and infrastructure for publishing multimodal projects and experimental digital scholarship.

They serve as a conduit between various Libraries functions (copyright and intellectual property, discovery, preservation, technology and digital initiatives), between the Libraries and University of Pennsylvania Press (editorial vetting, production, marketing, peer review), and between various campus centers (such as the McNeil Center for Early American Studies and the Price Lab for Digital Humanities) to establish sustainable workflows, processes, and project choices that will enable the digital publishing pilot to succeed.

This is a two-year position with the possibility of extension for a further two years.

The compensation package for the fellowship includes a $65,000 salary plus benefits.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development, management, and assessment of a pilot of sustainable, innovative open publishing services for publications that may include e.g., archival materials, time-based media, data, and other digital media.
  • In collaboration with the Digital Projects and Publishing working group, recommend, implement, and manage a sustainable platform or interoperable infrastructure that will meet most campus needs in innovative digital publishing.
  • Provide outreach about the new publishing services to campus centers and departments and work in close cooperation with key campus partners (e.g., faculty, students, the press, campus centers, etc.) to discover and develop timely and relevant projects and programs that will prove the worth of the pilot.
  • Collaborate with Penn Press on multimodal digital publishing projects, working with editors, authors, and the Penn Press Faculty Editorial Board to scope potential projects and recommend best practices for planning, proof of concept creation and review, IP issues, etc.
  • Work with colleagues on the Research Data and Digital Scholarship and Educational Technology and Learning Management teams and the Price Lab for Digital Humanities to provide enriching, project-based pedagogical opportunities for students in data visualization, sound editing and recording, video production, text and data mining, and other digital methods required by the chosen projects.
  • Project manage the digital publication process for selected projects, ensuring their accessibility, discoverability, and sustainability.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with providers of next-generation publishing infrastructure (Lyrasis, DataCite, Educopia, etc.)
  • Keep current with changing research and publication expectations, especially developments in publishing and dissemination practices, platforms, and tools.
  • Participate in regional, national, and international communities of practice.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • 3-5 years’ experience in publishing, digital projects, or library and information sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of trends in higher education, academic libraries, open research infrastructure, scholarly publishing, organizational development, and stakeholder management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the scholarly publishing ecosystem and how it pertains to digital scholarship projects, and of the digital research lifecycle.
  • Experience with and knowledge of digital scholarly publishing platforms.
  • A demonstrated record managing a portfolio of projects at different scales and priorities, each with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships across multiple institutional divisions.

Open Scholarship Librarian

New York University Libraries is seeking a faculty librarian to support the open scholarship, digital publishing, and repository needs of research and teaching across a wide range of social sciences, humanities, and sciences fields at NYU. This individual works in a unit that includes the Scholarly Communications and Information Policy and Digital Scholarship Services departments as part of a team working to grow and sustain a constantly evolving set of services that supports researchers across the full scholarly communication lifecycle, including content creation, preservation, and storage; rights management; and content discovery and dissemination.

The Open Scholarship Librarian plays a key role in developing and implementing a broad-ranging outreach and education program for digital publishing and repository services for NYU. They work in close collaboration with other specialists to promote tools and services in support of Open Access and Open Scholarship, such as the institutional repository, ORCID Identifiers, and Digital Object Identifiers; to identify and document workflow best practices for the curation and management of digital collections and digital publishing projects, including collections such as electronic theses and dissertations; and to instruct researchers in navigating rights and access issues.This person works collaboratively with Liaison and instruction librarians, technologists, metadata architects, preservation specialists, and developers within NYU Libraries to maintain and improve systems for description, storage, discovery, rights management, and access to digital content held within the institutional repository.

The Open Scholarship Librarian participates in library-wide committees, activities, and special projects, especially those involving new methodologies and scholarly communication practices, especially as they relate to open access and open scholarship. They will develop and maintain awareness of scholarly communication initiatives across subject areas, attending professional meetings, workshops and conferences for training and continuing professional development. As a member of the Scholarly Communications and Information Policy department, this position reports to the Director of Scholarly Communications and Information Policy and operates in close coordination with the Scholarly Communications Librarian, Digital Scholarship Services, Data Services, Preservation and Conservation, and Digital Library Technology Services.

Research

Faculty Librarians also explore their own active research agenda, contributing their expertise, experiences, and investigations to build new knowledge in their chosen areas. The Open Scholarship Librarian will be well positioned to make substantive contributions to research in a number of areas, including, but not limited to, explorations of the role that libraries play in cultivating an open research culture and leveraging that culture to promote more inclusive equitable, and ethical research and publication practices; the collaborative establishment of non-commercial online resources and practices; the role of libraries in creating necessary technological systems that enable equitable access to online information; the consideration of biases within the terminology, architecture, and encoding of these systems; and the ethical and privacy considerations that arise in an era of mass data collection.
