OER, Graphic Design, and Digital Publishing Specialist

Job Description:  

The OER, Graphic Design, and Digital Publishing Specialist supports the work of the Open Education Initiative which is committed to collaborative work resulting in adoption, adaptation, creation and public sharing of peer-reviewed faculty-authored course materials that are publicly released under open licenses. The specialist works with the Assistant Director of Open Education, Virginia Tech authors, and other team members to ideate, design, develop, adapt, and publish open educational resources and related ancillary learning resources in a variety of formats. With a focus on cohesive design, usability (including accessibility and user experience), and open-licensing of to-be-published resources, the specialist evaluates existing manuscripts, explores applications of alternative technologies, designs original graphical elements to convey complex data and concepts, consults with authors, identifies, uses, and creates openly-licensed elements, implements accessibility strategies, and typesets undergraduate and graduate-level text/mathematical/and figure-intensive manuscripts in Pressbooks or other publishing software. The specialist also contributes to regular project management conversations, informal program and process evaluations, suggestions for improvements, and collaborates with the team in goal setting and implementation.

This position will work with technologies such as Spreadsheets, Pressbooks, H5P, Tableau, TablePress, Adobe Acrobat DC, MSWord, GoogleOffice Suite, Microsoft Teams, PDF remediation software, LaTeX, mathematics conversion software, in-house project management tools, and other software to support projects and develop publishable manuscripts.

Required Qualifications:  
– Proficiency and demonstrated experience using software tools and platforms to create college-level open textbooks or other open educational resources
– Ability to identify potential copyright and open licensing issues in digital and print content
– Experience in designing and producing visually-cohesive data and/or concept-rich college-level learning resources including but not limited to long-form textbooks
– Demonstrated success in establishing and building collaborative working relationships with people from a diversity of backgrounds, disciplines, and perspectives
– Strong interpersonal and communication skills
– Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and within a collaborative team environment
– Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to effectively troubleshoot technical issues in digital publishing
– Excellent time management and ability to successfully handle multiple priorities
– Demonstrated ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously, to set priorities, and to meet deadlines
 
Preferred Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s degree in a STEM or other notation-rich discipline
– Experience in library publishing
– Exceptional proficiency in Pressbooks and in coaching others to use Pressbooks and features within (CSS, TablePress, image sizing etc.)
– Exceptional proficiency with spreadsheets
– Experience developing or improving project tracking, communication, and team productivity tools
– Extensive experience with designing technical and information-rich figures for learning resources
– Experience typesetting mathematics with LaTeX and/or MathML
– Extensive expertise in finding, creating, sharing, and attributing Creative Commons’ licensed works
– Effective management of student peer-review meetings and processes

Within WSULS’ Discovery Services Unit, the digital publishing team supports active journals, open textbooks, and the University’s institutional repository. Alongside other WSULS units, the publishing team is working or has worked on open educational resources, digital pedagogy outreach and training materials, and digital humanities projects, as well as open-access backlist eBooks and journal archives from the university press. Position Description:

The Publishing Librarian works within the Discovery Services Unit under the supervision of the Assistant Dean. The Library Publishing team is focused on sustainable open publishing, with a pedagogical focus on new practitioners and a commitment to supporting our campus in its engagement with the scholarly communication ecosystem. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with scholars from a variety of backgrounds, including faculty, librarians, students, and the broader community to conceive, enact, advance, and sustain digital, open, library-centered publishing and scholarship. This position has broad latitude to collaborate with partners within and outside the university to pursue advancements in areas including but not limited to new conceptions and outputs of library publishing, publishing workflows and competencies, digital publishing platforms, publishing pedagogy, and digital humanities. Publishing librarians often team with liaison librarian colleagues to support scholarly communication and copyright initiatives in the university. This position also supports Wayne State University library’s institutional repository (currently Bepress’s Digital Commons) in collaboration with the Library Publishing team, including ETD management, journal publishing, and outreach to students and faculty for projects appropriate to the IR.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Collaborate with partners inside and outside the library to conceive and support open scholarship, repository services, and other publishing-related initiatives.
  • Translate ideas developed in collaboration with partners into actionable workflows and infrastructure in the library, with an emphasis on open digital models.
  • Provide project management for ongoing Initiatives in the support and advancement of scholarly publishing services.

Appointment/Benefits

This is a full-time, regular, 12-month, benefits-eligible appointment as Academic Staff, represented by the AAUP-AFT on an Employment Security Status track. The minimum starting salary for this position at Librarian I is $59,000 and the maximum salary for this position at Librarian II is $63,800. Research Data Curation Coordinator

The University of Houston seeks a Research Data Curation Coordinator to lead data services across the research lifecycle. Reporting to the Head of Research Services within the University Libraries, the Research Data Curation Coordinator will establish partnerships in the Libraries and on campus to address existing and emerging research data needs of faculty and students and collaborate with researchers to develop data skills through workshops, classroom instruction, and direct interaction with ongoing research projects and infrastructural initiatives. This position supervises one full-time librarian with the possibility of additional personnel based on demonstrated need.  

In these pursuits, the incumbent will build relationships with campus partners engaging in research administration, including the Division of Research, University Information Technology, and the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Science Institute. This position also provides opportunities to collaborate with library colleagues to promote research data best practices for accessibility, archiving, assessment, attribution, and discoverability. There is potential growth for the position in areas of data analysis, data visualization, and other areas of digital scholarship. 

The Research Data Curation Coordinator is a librarian position. Librarians hold academic rank pursuant to the University of Houston Librarians’ Bylaws. They are expected to develop a record of service, scholarship, and professional development. Head of Digital Scholarship & Communication Services

The Head of Digital Scholarship and Communication Services is a position that leads the W. Frank Steely Library’s efforts in planning, implementing, and managing an active, comprehensive research services program that meets the educational needs of the campus. This is a unique opportunity to shape the library’s growing role leading digital scholarship services, including support for digital tools and collections, maker technology, and open educational resources. The individual will provide leadership for associated library technology and software and make recommendations for establishing new services related to digital scholarship.

Reporting to the Dean of the Library, the Department Head will lead a team of faculty librarians and staff who hold functional roles. The successful candidate is a dynamic, student-focused educator with demonstrated leadership skills, who continually transforms and assesses research services by using quantitative and qualitative data to inform planning while actively monitoring the campus curriculum. With enthusiasm, the Department Head will build an understanding of the library’s role in advancing the institution’s focus on undergraduate research. This position serves on the Library’s leadership team and will contribute to the development and implementation of the Library’s vision and goals.

The W. Frank Steely Library provides a wide range of library services to support the University’s commitment to its Success by Design strategic framework, which promotes student success by embracing inclusiveness, equity, global awareness, and academic needs of students and faculty in each academic college. Library faculty and staff have enhanced traditional services to better address 21st century information needs and are collaborative partners across campus. The library’s seventeen faculty members and eighteen staff members are leading NKU’s campus-wide Quality Enhancement Plan on Information Literacy and the implementation of an open educational resources platform for academic libraries throughout the state of Kentucky, and manage NKU’s makerspace for prototyping and fabrication.

NKU is a public comprehensive university located in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati, Ohio metropolitan area. The university delivers innovative, learner-centered education and engages in impactful scholarly and creative activities, all of which empower students for fulfilling careers and meaningful lives while contributing to the social and economic vitality of the region. NKU has almost 14,000 students, over 2,000 faculty and staff. Primary Responsibilities

Leadership in Digital Scholarship & Communications
· Supervises a team of librarians and staff responsible for implementing research services and outreach, including workload distribution, goal setting, performance evaluation, teaching observations, and professional development.
· Provides leadership for the development, maintenance, and support of digital scholarship services for both undergraduate and graduate programs, including face-to-face and virtual modes of delivery.
· Envisions, investigates, and launches new services aligned with the research and scholarship lifecycle, supporting areas including scholarly communications, data management, and geospatial information.
· Oversees the Stego Studio makerspace and program, a student-focused state of the art facility supporting prototyping, design, and creation across the disciplines.
· Supports the growing open educational resources (OER) program to enhance textbook affordability and social justice.
· Provides direction and supports growth of the digital repository (https://dspace.nku.edu/)
· Oversees library-led support for citation management services.
· Oversees training and professional development for librarians and staff on aspects of digital scholarship and communications, including best practices.

OER Publishing Resident Librarian

The University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press seeks an early career librarian with an interest in open education, open access, and publishing. Working closely with colleagues who advocate for open educational resources (OER) in the Library, Museums and Press and across the University, the Pauline A. Young Resident will have the opportunity to lead efforts to develop sustainable workflows around OER publishing. Interest in OER has been growing at the University of Delaware. The University’s Strategic Plan specifically mentions the need to expand the use of and access to OER to help reduce students’ costs. The Library also offers yearly grants to faculty to support the adoption of open and affordable course materials. We have supported dozens of projects across academic departments, and have saved students nearly half a million dollars in materials costs. We are excited to further support open publishing as a next step in this work.

Reporting to the Head, Digital Initiatives and Preservation (DIP), the Resident will be able to learn from a diverse team committed to providing support to students, faculty and staff in teaching and scholarly research. DIP handles a range of types of work, including digitizing and preserving collections materials for research and teaching; and helping students, faculty, and staff navigate questions about digital publishing. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) values are inherently high priorities for DIP. The department contributes to the social justice goals of the Library, Museums and Press by prioritizing projects that center and give voice to marginalized or excluded communities. Other important collaborators with this position include the University of Delaware Press and the Learning, Engagement, and Curricular Support Division.

The Resident will have the opportunity to participate in the following activities:

  • Assess faculty needs around publishing OER

  • Build partnerships with others who advocate for OER in the Library, Museums and Press and across the University

  • Serve as a member of the Open and Affordable Teaching Materials Working Group

  • Lead workshops and present to campus stakeholders on OER, open access, publishing, and copyright, both collaboratively and individually

  • Collaborate with faculty and liaison librarians to publish and disseminate locally produced OER, serving as the project manager on publications

  • Create appropriate documentation/outreach materials to support OER publishing efforts

  • Develop recommendations to help the Library, Museums and Press OER program continue to grow and be successful

The Pauline A. Young Residency is a three-year appointment offering professional experience in an academic research library to recent graduates of a library/information science program.  The purpose of the residency is to encourage the involvement of individuals from under-represented groups in academic librarianship. Started in 1984, the Pauline A. Young Residency is among the Library’s most successful efforts to advance equity, diversity and inclusion. The residency is designed to meet both the professional goals and interests of the Resident as well as the service and operational priorities of the Library and to that end, the resident will participate in developing goals for the residency according to their professional interests. The purpose of the residency is to encourage the involvement of individuals from under-represented groups in academic librarianship.

Oversees the publication of original scholarship published under the University’s imprimatur; supervises Press staff and student interns in the acquisition, production, marketing, and distribution of books and journals and ensures for the appropriate administrative and technological infrastructure to support their work. Establishes and maintains publishing partnerships to enhance the Press’s publishing program quantitatively and qualitatively. Determines and implements Press policies and procedures.

30% – Essential – Fiscal Operations:
Provides leadership and directions for the strategic planning of the Press.  Prepares reports for the Libraries administration. Manages the fiscal operations of the Press, including financial planning, execution of budget plans, and maintenance of financial records. Establishes print runs and pricing.  Works in collaboration with the Development Officer and the Dean of Libraries to seek new revenue sources and develop fundraising strategies and campaigns for the Press’s overall publishing program. Negotiates and maintains external agreements with vendors and publishing partners, cultivates financial support and subsidies from donors and other sources.

15% – Essential – Representation:
Represents the Press locally and nationally to the media, at publishing events, and in front of professional bodies and scholarly organizations. Develops and maintains connections with authors, prospective authors, vendors, other press directors, faculty, members of General Counsel’s office, and potential funders.

15% – Essential – Collaboration:
Collaborates with the Open Scholarship Department to provide scholarly publishing services, including guidance throughout the publication process, promotion, and adoption of DOIs, and the publication of open-access journals.  The director negotiates and maintains external agreements with vendors and publishing partners.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: A terminal degree in a core field within the Press’s publishing program

Work Experience: 3+ years experience in publishing (academic or trade)

Clemson Libraries seeks a dynamic, driven, and collaborative Department Head for Open Scholarship to provide leadership and expertise at Clemson Libraries. The Open Scholarship Department includes services such as open educational resources, scholarly communications, experiential learning, research data services, and digital humanities/scholarship.  The department also houses learning spaces including the Scholars’ Lab, the Adobe Studio and Makerspace.
The Department Head of Open Scholarship (OS) will be responsible for planning, implementing, and managing a newly created open scholarship department that provides support for digital scholarship, digital literacy, data literacy, digital preservation, faculty research, Open Access initiatives and advocacy, and scholarly communication.  The department head will play an active role in recruiting and retaining faculty librarians and staff for the department. The department head will also collaborate with faculty, administrators, and staff to create meaningful partnerships with campus groups including the Division of Research, Clemson Computing & Information Technology, Graduate School, the Office of General Counsel, etc.  This position requires a high degree of collaborative leadership and initiative and will be critical to the Libraries’ strategic growth as an R1 institution.
