Position Summary:
Manages and supports the publishing services, operations and web presence for the Center for Digital Research and Scholarship (CDRS) collections. With knowledge of 21st century libraries, evaluates technologies and implements improvements for digital publishing and hosting services. Trains faculty, staff, and students in the university community to use open source publishing software hosted by the library. Creates documentation and training materials. Contributes to the development of publishing services policies.
Interacts with faculty, researchers and other members of the university community to support their publishing enterprises. Works with journal editors and conference organizers to establish and maintain publishing and proceedings workflows, editorial processes, and reader/author services. Troubleshoots workflow and technical issues as needed. Collaborates with VTechworks Librarian and Repository Collections Specialists to ensure access to appropriate publications through VTechWorks, the library-managed institutional repository service. Evaluates user satisfaction with CDRS digital publishing services and resources, recommending changes and/or new services. Hires and supervises student assistants. Periodically gathers data and prepares reports for CDRS publishing services.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a field complementary to publishing and library service. Experience working with online resource management. Experience with HTML code and web site maintenance. Familiarity with CSS (cascading style sheets) and SSI (server side includes). Experience with basic office software and Adobe Acrobat. Working knowledge of digital file formats, metadata, database applications, file uploading, and data migration. Effective communication skills. Time management skills and demonstrated project collaboration experience. Familiarity with Macintosh working environment. Must be adaptable in an evolving online environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in library, computer, or information science. Experience working in an academic library. Experience with open source software, publishing, and project management. Experience with Adobe Photoshop or similar image manipulation software and graphic design. Knowledge of web accessibility standards. Experience with XML, Java/JavaScript, PHP, Perl, MySQL and/or ORACLE. Experience with UNIX server environments. Understanding of web technologies (e.g., browsers and plugins). Programming experience helpful, but not required
