Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the UNT Dean of Libraries, the Director for Library Publishing will lead the development and operation of a prospective innovative program for collaborative publishing based in the UNT Libraries. Working closely with the Dean and other UNT stakeholders, the Director will provide overall leadership for the initiative, coordinate planning and operations for the UNT Libraries’ publishing programs. The Director will undertake a variety of activities to plan and build the proposed library publishing program, as follows. The positions is a temporary two-year appointment, with the possibility of subsequent reappointment.
Identify and plan opportunities for library publishing endeavors; collaborative activities led by and based in the UNT libraries to support the creation, dissemination, and curation of scholarly, creative, and/or educational works, especially those that represent innovative yet sustainable new approaches to scholarship. Examples include online journals and on-demand print run items.
Work collaboratively with UNT stakeholders including the UNT Press, Digital Scholarship Cooperative, Digital Libraries division, other library divisions, and UNT faculty on library publishing opportunities.
Prepare grant applications in collaboration with other UNT stakeholders to generate start-up funds for library publishing endeavors.
Generate new revenue streams for the UNT Libraries and Press through entrepreneurial activities, especially those that expand access to archival collections (both analog and digital).
Provide expertise and advice regarding new primarily digital approaches to publishing, including conversion from plain text to XML, layout and typesetting, graphic design, and conceptualizing new digital forms of scholarship.
Scope, plan, and manage prospective library publishing workflows for students and grant-funded specialists.
Act as liaison between UNT and national Library Publishing Coalition.
Engage in outreach efforts on the emerging topic of library publishing, including presentations to the UNT community and external groups.
Minimum Qualifications:
MS/MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program
At least five years of professional experience in successful library publishing efforts.
Strong knowledge of publishing and innovative approaches to publishing.
Expertise and knowledge of advanced digital library systems, especially those supporting publishing efforts.
Demonstrated aptitude for entrepreneurial planning in digital library efforts.
Proven ability to plan and implement new programs.
A self-starter with significant achievement in innovative library services.
Excellent communication skills, including strong written, verbal and presentation skills.
Proven ability to function as an effective team member, with the interpersonal and motivational skills necessary to work collaboratively with persons across disciplines and at all levels.
Qualifications sufficient to be appointed at the level of Associate Librarian (without tenure) under the University of North Texas Librarians’ Procedures for Appointment, Evaluation and Promotion document.
