The LPC maintains a list of jobs that incorporate library publishing roles. To be included in this list, the position must be located administratively in a library, or report directly to a library-based supervisor. The primary function(s) of the position must directly engage in the creation, dissemination, and/or curation of scholarly, creative, and/or educational works. Administrative positions that do not directly engage in these functions may be included if they include supervisory responsibility primarily for employees who are performing these functions.

Clemson University Libraries invites candidates for a tenure-track Scholarly Communications Librarian. The Scholarly Communications Librarian will collaborate closely with librarians, faculty, students, and other academic units to lead and facilitate efforts related to scholarly communications. The incumbent will support new models of research and scholarship by providing and managing innovative digital tools and publishing platforms for content creation, delivery, discovery, and analysis. This position also supports faculty and students in the areas of copyright and intellectual property. Library faculty are members of the academic community, with responsibilities in the areas of librarianship, scholarship, and service. The incumbent is accountable to the Head of Library Technology.

Responsibilities include:

Librarianship, Instruction, and Outreach

· Serves as an advocate for new forms and practices of scholarly communications on campus and in the broader academic community.

· Integrates scholarly communications into library instruction and departmental liaison activities. Develops instructional resources and workshops. Provides guidance to library staff regarding scholarly communication and coordinates with subject specialists to broaden the understanding of scholarly communication issues.

· Serves as a campus resource on issues and trends relevant to intellectual property, copyright, fair use, author rights, open access, and metrics for assessing impact of scholarly works.

· Leads the Libraries’ institutional repository initiatives through solicitation of content from students and faculty, including deposits of journal articles, conference proceedings, and other published and unpublished research.

· Oversees scholarly publishing services, including promotion and adoption of ORCIDs and DOIs, collaboration with the Clemson University Press, and managing open access journals. Manages the Libraries’ Open Access Publishing Fund Program.

· Collaborates with the Open Resources Librarian to promote open educational resources (OER) and affordable learning initiatives to the campus community.

Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities

· Develops a focused program of high-quality research and creative accomplishments, consistent with professional responsibilities and the Libraries’ mission and goals.


· Actively participates and demonstrates leadership in professional responsibilities that serve the libraries, university, profession, and community.

Required Qualifications

· An ALA-accredited graduate degree in librarianship or a relevant accredited graduate degree in another scholarly field as deemed appropriate by the Libraries.

· Knowledge of copyright and other intellectual property issues in an academic environment.

· Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

· Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.

· Ability to collaborate with diverse groups and communicate ideas effectively.

· Demonstrated understanding of the value of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Preferred Qualifications

· Knowledge of broad technology trends in libraries and higher education.

· Demonstrated ability to learn and use new technologies.

· Evidence of, or potential for, scholarly and professional activity.

· Supervisory experience

Salary and Benefits

Faculty rank and competitive salary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. The salary range is $68,000-$70,000. Various medical plans, dental plans, and retirement plans are available. 18 days annual leave, 15 days sick leave, 13 paid holidays, and liberal professional development leave are provided. Library faculty receive an individual stipend for travel or other professional development activity.
