The Libraries

Scholarly Communication and Publishing Department
Located in the Suzzallo and Allen Libraries, the Scholarly Communication and Publishing Department has system wide responsibility for copyright, electronic theses and dissertations, open access initiatives, and outreach to Libraries staff and the University community on matters relating to scholarly publishing.
The position
The Scholarly Publishing Outreach Librarian is the Libraries’ coordinator and chief resource on copyright-related scholarly communication and information policy issues as they pertain to Libraries services and initiatives. Under the general direction of the Director, Scholarly Communication and Publishing, the position will play an essential role in the new department by developing programs, strengthening outreach and advisory services, and providing support for UW authors and users of copyrighted material. The Scholarly Publishing Outreach Librarian works collaboratively with UW Libraries and campus partners and also participates as a team
member in support of a broad range of scholarly communication support services including open access and electronic theses and dissertations.
Specific responsibilities and duties
Serves as the Libraries’ chief resource for copyright and permissions issues, acts as liaison with the University’s legal counsel and represents the Libraries to the University in copyright matters.
Advises faculty, staff, and graduate students about such copyright issues as authors’ rights, fair use, copyright compliance, and other issues regarding the rights of creators and users of original works of authorship, especially works of scholarship.
Advises UW faculty and staff on copyright issues related to the submission of works to the University’s institutional repository, ResearchWorks Archive.
Advises Libraries staff and partners on copyright issues associated with digitization projects.
Advises UW instructors and Libraries staff on copyright issues associated with open educational resources.
Leads the Libraries’ efforts to develop and promote copyright education programs and copyright best practices among faculty, researchers and students.
Monitors state, national, and international trends in copyright law.
Participates in active outreach to increase awareness among faculty, researchers, students, and staff about a broad range of scholarly communication issues including copyright, open access publishing, electronic theses and dissertations, and authors’ rights.
Works with liaisons/subject librarians to develop educational materials to increase awareness among faculty, researchers, and students about scholarly communication issues.
Maintains the Libraries’ scholarly communication and copyright web presence.
Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
A minimum of two years post-MLIS professional academic library experience, with evidence of increased responsibilities.
Demonstrated broad knowledge of the scholarly publishing enterprise and scholarly communication trends, issues, and best practices in academic research libraries.
Experience working with copyright law and intellectual property questions in an academic environment.
Experience providing scholarly communication services to faculty and students in an academic research library.
Strong oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, enthusiasm for instruction and communicating emerging issues.
Demonstrated experience working well with colleagues.
Demonstrated experience using technology to communicate and manage online content.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
Demonstrated project management skills.
Knowledge of institutional repository trends and best practices.
Experience configuring, using, and/or supporting applications which enable scholars’ publishing efforts (including, but not limited to, Symplectic Elements, Open Journal Systems, DSpace).
$58,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.
Position will be at rank of Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian, depending on qualifications and background.
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
