The University of Alberta Libraries seeks a highly creative, skilled, team-oriented professional who is ready to develop and lead an ambitious agenda for supporting open library publishing and a revitalized robust digitization program.

The Head, Library Publishing and Digital Production Services provides vision, leadership and direction for strategic and operational planning in library-led open access digital publishing and digital-production related services and initiatives. Working collaboratively with other colleagues, including the Associate University Librarian for Digital Initiatives (direct supervisor), and the Director and Publisher of the University of Alberta Press, the position oversees the effective delivery and development of library open access publishing and digitization services in alignment with the Libraries’ and University’s strategic goals.

The incumbent ensures effective services and production processes are proposed, developed and maintained by the team, and will directly supervise professional staff, e.g. Digitization Librarian, Digital Initiatives Projects Librarian, as well as non-academic support staff. The incumbent works closely with colleagues supporting scholarly communications metadata, technology, preservation, collections, and public services to ensure the successful planning, coordination, execution and assessment of OA publishing and digitization initiatives and services, as required.

Working with colleagues across campus and external to the organization, the incumbent ensures good communications and relationships with many categories of people, including new and potential users and partners of the Libraries’s publishing and digitization programs.

The incumbent participates in local, regional and national initiatives related to library publishing, digitization, and the larger umbrella of scholarly communications and open access, in order to support the success of our services and to contribute to the Libraries’ goal of improving scholarly communication and its role as a partner in supporting the research lifecycle.

The Head, Library Publishing and Digital Production Services may participate in and seek opportunities for professional and scholarly research, including the ability to apply for and hold research funding as a principal applicant. Qualifications include:

  • Masters level degree MLIS from an ALA accredited institution
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working directly with scholarly communications initiatives, library publishing, digitization, or related areas
  • Project management and hands on experience leading new initiatives and complex projects is expected
  • Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience working with publishing and/or digitizing tools and standards

Applicants must possess a strong service orientation, excellent communication skills, a thorough understanding and awareness of today’s scholarly communication, publishing and digital production environments, an interest in implementing new initiatives and in evaluation of current practice and workflows, a commitment to open access, strong leadership and supervisory skills, a demonstrated commitment to cooperative action and collaborative work, and commitment to supporting the goals of the Libraries and its stakeholders with respect to disseminating and providing access to research outputs, and the stewardship of information resources.

This is a Librarian position classified at the Librarian II level with a current salary range of $86,744 to $144,452 per annum. Librarians at the University of Alberta have academic status and participate in a generous benefits program.
