The primary function(s) of the position must directly engage in the creation, dissemination, and/or curation of scholarly, creative, and/or educational works. Administrative positions that do not directly engage in these functions may be included if they include supervisory responsibility primarily for employees who are performing these functions.

Job Description: The University Libraries at Virginia Tech seeks a full-time Publishing Services Specialist with a passion for project management and an eagerness to grow with the latest trends and best practices in digital-first, open access publishing. As a member of the Virginia Tech Publishing team, the Publishing Services Specialist will play an important role in the day-to-day publishing activities including managing a wide range of digital publishing projects to completion. Essential to the position is a detail-oriented workstyle, an ability to multitask, and a desire to work closely with library colleagues as well as faculty and students from across the Virginia Tech community.
Required Qualifications:
  • Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate work with faculty, staff, and students in sustaining today’s evolving digital publishing service environments, ensuring the quality, integrity, and curation of digital information.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proven organizational skills including the ability to multi-task, adapt to changing workflows and tools, and engage in creative problem solving
  • Strong computer literacy skills including fluency with basic office tools (Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro, and Google products); willingness to learn new tools and technologies
  • Experience in an academic environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a humanities or social science field
  • Knowledge of library systems and technologies
  • Knowledge of publishing trends, issues, and strategies as well as current digital publishing technologies, standards, and best practices.
  • Copy editing experience; knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style
  • Experience using InDesign or other design software
