Publishing Librarian I/II/III

The Wayne State University Library System (WSULS) seeks an innovative, service-oriented Publishing Librarian (I/II/III) to advance the University’s mission to create and advance knowledge, prepare a diverse student body to thrive, and positively impact local and global communities. The successful candidate joins an accomplished team of library professionals in a long-standing library publishing program, which is a founding member of the Library Publishing Coalition. Within WSULS’ Discovery Services Unit (DSU), the digital publishing team works to support four active journals, and has focused on and supports the adoption and growth of the University’s institutional repository and digital collections. Alongside other WSULS units, the publishing team is working on open educational resources, digital pedagogy outreach and training materials, digital humanities projects, and digital collections platforms, as well as open-access backlist eBooks and journal archives from the university press. As we expand library publishing, WSULS seeks to further its leadership in digital-publishing workflows, infrastructures, and pedagogy and welcomes a librarian whose commitment to uncommon thinking in these areas will push forward our diversity of thought, embodied practice, and publication outreach. Position Description: 

The Publishing Librarian works within the DSU under the supervision of the Assistant Dean. Located in WSULS’s developing organizational unit called the Publishing House, which is a pedagogically focused publishing center in the Libraries, the successful candidate will work in collaboration with students, faculty, librarians, and the broader community to conceive, enact, advance, and sustain digital library-centered publishing and scholarship. This position has broad latitude to collaborate with partners in and outside the university to pursue advancements in areas including but not limited to publishing workflows and competencies, digital publishing platforms, publishing pedagogy, digital humanities, and digital collections.

Early opportunities will include contributing to the implementation phases of the Vega publishing system, the establishment of the Publishing House, and collaboration with the Michigan Digital Publishing group–a coalition of publishing thought-leaders at state universities in the Michigan Research Corridor.

Essential Job Functions: 

* Collaborate with partners inside and outside the library to conceive and support open scholarship, repository services, and other publishing-related initiatives.

* Translate ideas developed in collaboration with partners into actionable workflows and infrastructure in the library, with an emphasis on open digital models.

* Provide project management for ongoing Initiatives in the support and advancement of scholarly publishing services.

* Contribute to the production activities of the publishing team

Qualifications

* Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school.

* Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in a higher education setting.

* Curiosity and a commitment to learn where knowledge gaps exist.

* Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently to manage projects and initiatives and to set priorities.

* Understanding of scholarly communication issues.

* Competency in identifying, analyzing, and solving problems.

* Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience instantiating and working with the evolving ecosystem of digital tools, such as Omeka, and their dependencies.

* Experience with UNIX/Linux/OSX operating systems and the LAMP environment.

* Demonstrated experience or competency in one or more areas of professional practice in scholarly publishing and repository management.

* Experience teaching.

* Knowledge of one or more common web programming or scripting languages (e.g. Ruby, Python, PHP, Javascript).

* Knowledge of developing technologies, standards, and best practices in digital scholarship, data services, and open publishing.

* Demonstrated experience with digital research approaches and techniques, such as text encoding or analysis, web development, digital storytelling, multimodal publishing, digital exhibits, or database design.

Scholarly Communications Librarian I/II

Villanova University’s Falvey Memorial Library seeks a dynamic, engaging, and collaborative professional to lead the Library’s scholarly communication efforts in coordination with internal and external partners. Reporting to the Associate Director of Research Services and Scholarly Engagement, the Scholarly Communications Librarian identifies, develops, and promotes strategic scholarly communication services and programs. The incumbent engages others around scholarly communication issues through outreach, education, training, and collaborative projects. The successful candidate will also be responsible for outreach, information literacy instruction, research support, and collection development in assigned disciplines and programs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leads the Library’s scholarly communication program. Works collaboratively to set directions, manage projects, and educate the Villanova community.
  • Serves as the Library’s expert on scholarly communication including, but not limited to, alternative publishing models, intellectual property rights, scholarly visibility and impact, online identity management, and equitable access to the University’s scholarly output.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with faculty, students, and staff. Implements an active and engaging outreach program to ensure awareness of scholarly communication issues and trends among Villanova community. Advocates for community needs to other library staff.
  • Oversees library publication projects such as the Library’s Open Journal Systems implementation.
  • Advocates campus-wide for open access.
  • Leads exploration of best practices in documenting and strengthening access to the University’s intellectual output.
  • Surveys and assesses community needs for scholarly communication services and programs.
  • Partners with faculty on research projects and course design. Consults with faculty, students, and staff on scholarly communication issues. Creates educational resources on scholarly communication topics.
  • Serves as liaison to one or more academic departments or programs.

Qualifications include:

  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution, or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Clear understanding of academic research and scholarly communication practices.
  • Experience advising others on scholarly communication topics.
  • Demonstrated ability for developing effective and strategic partnerships with members of a diverse community.
  • Ability to effectively articulate complex concepts such as copyright, fair use, and open access.
  • Knowledge of and interest in issues, trends and technologies related to scholarly communication.
  • Experience successfully managing collaborative projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective training modules/tools.

Publishing and Repository Services Librarian

The Publishing and Repository Services Librarian leads The Ohio State University Libraries program for innovative and sustainable publishing and repository services to support scholarly content creation and stewardship. This tenure-track faculty position provides operational, tactical, and strategic leadership for the Libraries Open Access digital publishing and institutional repository services and initiatives. The Publishing and Repository Services Librarian builds new capacity, publishing partnerships, and services and sustains existing, successful initiatives. This work will include accelerating campus partnerships, advancing the Libraries publishing program, and guiding the continued growth of Ohio State’s institutional repository, the Knowledge Bank.

The Ohio State University Libraries currently publishes and hosts fifteen Open Access journals, archives the research and scholarship of more than 100 campus partners, and promotes the open sharing of scholarly works created by Ohio State faculty, staff, and students. As a member of the Scholarly Sharing Program Area’s leadership team, the Publishing and Repository Services Librarian reports to the Scholarly Sharing Strategist and helps support new models for the dissemination of research, scholarship, and creative expression in alignment with the Libraries strategic directions. The Publishing and Repository Services unit currently includes three staff members and .5 FTE students. Publishing and Repository Services works in close collaboration with Copyright Services, the Libraries’ Research Commons, Libraries IT, and subject specialists. Campus partners include the university press and an affordable textbook publishing program managed by the OCIO.

Key Responsibilities
• Provides vision, focus, and leadership for publishing and repository services within University Libraries.
• Manages the staff and operations in the Publishing and Repository Services unit.
• Engages with partners within University Libraries, with other campus constituencies, and with
consortial partners and communities of collaboration to support the advancement of strategic
activities in scholarly publishing and repository services.
• Promotes engagement with and leadership contributions to national conversations relating to Open
Access, scholarly communication, and author’s rights.
• Builds and maintains a research program and service profile related to publishing and repository services. Presents and publishes in appropriate venues in order to raise own and Libraries’ profile.

Required Qualifications
• An ALA-accredited master’s degree, a master’s degree with specialization in archives, a master’s degree in museum studies or a comparable graduate degree in one of the above fields from a non- U.S. university, reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
• Minimum of three years of relevant professional experience including progressively responsible leadership experience resulting in strong leadership capabilities.
• A track record of building effective partnerships and sustaining relationships in a collaborative and complex environment.
• Strong expertise in many facets of professional practice relating to scholarly publishing and repository models and trends.
• Experience with new and emerging technologies that support scholarly publishing.
• Commitment to librarianship, scholarship, and service, which are required criteria to meet
University and University Libraries requirements for promotion and tenure.
